Description
Newfoundland Tartan Alphabet of Everyday Words and Phrases by Barbara Griffin. This is the official Newfoundland tartan. The word or phrase chosen for each letter is used in traditional Newfoundland dialect.
Newfoundland is an island that was first settled by Irish, English, Scottish, French and other settlers. There are many accents and dialects of the English language used throughout the island. Because of previous isolation, each dialect and accent was able to flourish in that particular area. Today the dialect of spoken English is closer to Canadian mainland speech.
Oftentimes unfairly discriminated against or mocked, today it is looked upon as a valuable part of our cultural heritage. Many of these accents and dialects are still in use in south west Ireland and south east England, but many are Newfoundland creations.
These words and phrases are some of my favorites, you may have chosen differently. The letter X was one of the most difficult to choose a word for, so I settled on Xmas which is by no means a Newfoundland phrase, but is common in written form. This is not meant to poke fun at, but to enjoy and to remember part of our heritage.
